Books are like windows and mirrors!
Children need windows to see new things, understand the world around them and the vast diversity of everything in it. They also need mirrors to reflect on what they already know, observe around them and feel connected to. Challenge is to provide such books in local languages that deliver the content with following qualities:
-
Topics relevant to today’s young children
- Language style that is not too archaic and heavy
- Contemporary mannerism of storytelling
- Accompanied with colourful illustrations that attract young readers
- Introduce variety of subjects that ignite curiosity
Marathi Pustakalay project aims to bring such content in light and enrich the libraries in preschools and primary schools with a curated book-set of 100 books that fulfils above criteria. Donating this set to Anganwadi centres, libraries and underprivileged schools can play an important role in promoting early literacy. It can also be a pivotal factor in making the children bilingual readers in case of English medium schools.
